TAVR surgical procedure repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place. The surgery may be called a TAVR or transcatheter aortic valve implantation. It is Food and Drug administration approved for people with symptomatic AS who are considered an intermediate or high risk patient for standard valve replacement surgery. Many patients who had been terminally ill from AS or insufficiency and unresponsive to medical therapy can be restored to good health with TAVR.
TAVR technology has also been successfully expanded to a variety of other clinical situations, including treatment of degenerative surgical aortic and mitral prostheses, bicuspid aortic valve stenosis and pure aortic incompetence.
